BEARS OUT OF THE WOODS AND INTO FINAL

By Steve Brown

The Basin has advanced into the Reeves Shield grand final after a solid win against top side

Upwey Tecoma at the weekend. The Bears, searching for their first top flight premiership,

will play the winner of next week’s preliminary final between Knoxfield and Upwey Tecoma in a home final at Batterham Park.

On day one of the semi-final clash Jake Best held The Basin innings together with 54 in a

modest total of 181 before their bowlers knocked over the Tigers for just 129. Match

winner, Josh Lee had a day out claiming 5/14 from 17 overs including 10 maidens whilst

partner in crime and Victorian Country X1 representative Jake Sherriff bowled 23 impressive

overs for 4/35. The Tigers were done after the loss of vital wicket of Matt Mulcahy for 22

before losing their last five wickets for just 25 runs.

At Carrington Park, Knoxfield put an end to Ferntree Gully’s season winning by six wickets.

A win against Upwey Tecoma in the preliminary final will see the Knights challenge for their

third premiership in a row. Ferntree Gully was dismissed for 194 on day one with a patient

innings of 59 off 135 balls from Jayden Bradbury as Jack Taylor 3/48 and off spinner Zac

Wilson 4/43 from 19 overs did the damage with the ball. In reply, The Knights (4/202) were

never in trouble as Trent Scholfield’s unbeaten knock of 65 saw them home with 24 overs to

spare.

In Decoite Shield ladder leaders Ferntree Gully Footballers find themselves in the grand final

after holding off a determined Monbulk by four wickets. Chasing Monbulk’s 201, the

Griffins required four runs per over from the last ten and were victorious with ten balls to

spare. In the other semi-final, Lysterfield (3/117) was too strong for Rowville after

dismissing the Hawks for just 116 on the first day. The Beavers must get over Monbulk

next week to challenge Footballers for the Shield.
