GULLY BLOCKS PANTHERS – PREMIERS DEMOTED
By Steve Brown
Phones were running hot on the final one day round of Reeves Shield action as the final four was settled. There were no fingernails left at Monbulk as Ferntree Gully overcame the hosts to win a thriller by just two wickets but more importantly locking in third place on the ladder and a crack at Belgrave in a sudden death semi final.
Monbulk batting first posted a formidable 5/197 thanks to half centuries to Shane Cosstick and Chris Coen whilst the Gully’s Bryce Galvin was in the wickets again with 3/34. After the tea break the Blues were well on track at 3/106 after 16 overs with Jayden Bradbury (41) leading the way until the collapse of the middle order opened the gate for the hawks. All rounder Galvin stepped up once again contributing 43 with the bat as the Blues claimed the win eight wickets down, and subsequently shut out fifth placed Eildon Park . It was never going to be an easy game at Monbulk, but Ryan Handley’s men can take some confidence into next week’s semi final.
Last season’s grand finalists came together at Eildon Park as the Panthers destroyed the Johnson Park Sharks inside 55 over’s of play. In a day that the reigning premiers would rather forget, the Sharks were the hunted, skittled for just 72 as the trio of Nathan Caton-Roberston 3/11 from 8 over’s, Andrew Brown 2/20 and Adrian Bultruchastis 2/14 showed no mercy. Cody Morris and the Hicks brothers polished off the deficit in 20 over’s, leaving Johnson Park at the bottom of the table and in Decoite Shield for next season.
At Upwey, all eyes were on eighth placed Knox Gardens and bottom side Upwey Tecoma who batted first and were dismissed in the 38th over for 177. Dain Howe clouted 41 in even time, dismissed in the eighth over as Adam Wild (3/15 from 8) and Nav Singh 2/28 restricted the Tigers who were on track for 200 plus. In a match winning move, Upwey skipper Steve Moore immediately introduced spin at both ends, taking the pace off the ball as Knox Gardens crawled to 3/51 from 20 over’s. Off spinner Jake Evans collected 3/16 from his spell including a brilliant catch off his own bowling and when the in-form Jarrod Butcher fell for 42 all hope for the Falcons was lost and they ended the day 26 runs in arrears.
The Basin got home in the last over of the day against Belgrave and will play Knoxfield at Carrington Park in the semi final with the winner progressing to the grand final in a new look finals series similar to football. Belgrave made first use of the wicket registering 6/136 with local radio duo Ben Carnell (40) and John Levell (36). Steve Ryan (2/14) and the ever improving Jarryd Debernardi (2/22) were the pick of the bowlers for the Bears. The Basin got the wobbles at 6/92 after Danny Rundle was dismissed for 45 bringing 16 year old debutant Connor Edwards to the crease with Scott Vozzo, before the pair combined for a match winning partnership of 46 with only four balls to spare. Edwards remained 33 not out in his first taste of Reeves Shield.
In the upset of the round Mt Gate will rile lost opportunities during the season after they defeated flag favourites Knoxfield by 3 wickets. Monash Tigers premiership player Tom Boxell will go into the finals in top form after his unbeaten century for Knoxfield, setting Mt Gate 197. Not to be outdone the Gators closed the day with 7/199 with the knowledge that they could match it with the best. Match winner Marshall Bunting ended a good season with 74 not out.
