Play on day one of round 5 got underway in bright sunshine, and in most cases the batsmen held the upper hand with 5 century's across 9 games.

At Batterham Park Scott Vozzo's 108 and Jayden Turcinovic 74* helped The Basin post 4/277 against Upper Ferntree Gully. The King's bowlers toiled hard to make inroads but the Bears had firm control. With both teams on 18 points the winner will take a handy step up. The Kings have the batting line up to chase the score, although The Basin has the bowling smarts to defend the total.

Knox Gardens made 228 on the back of Joe Morsello's unbeaten 108. Mountain Gate's Luke Turner returned the figures of 3/35 with the Gators hosting the Falcons at HV Jones. The Falcons may regret the opportunity missed to capitalise on Morsello's efforts.

Clearly Cam Wheeler (5/31) and Dave Carmen (3/26) failed to read today's script as the Upwey attack dismissed Belgrave for 72. In reply The Tigers are 3/158 with Matt Mulcahy 70 not out. Wheeler's 32 made sure his name will be in the votes.

Eildon Park's 253 may be enough to deny Johnson Park their first win of the season. The Panthers were well served by David Smyth (57) and Rasika Tennekumbura (40) while Ben Stallworthy's 3/61 kept the Sharks in the game.

Given Knoxfield's form with the bat Ferntree Gully's 214 may be a little light as the Blues look to bridge the gap between 4th and 1st position. Jayden Bradbury top scored for the Blues with 67 and enjoyed a 119 run partnership with Harrison Brown (55) before Ferntree Gully lost their last 8 wickets for 90 runs. Matthew Plumridge took the bowling honours for the Knights with 3 wickets from his 13 overs.

In DeCoite Shield Lysterfield duo Anthony Brolic (154) and Daniel Forster-Jennings (116) helped the Beavers amass 5/357 against Rowville, while Jason Fraser made 113 of Monbulk’s 6/277 against Knoxfield. Aaron Grenda fell 4 runs short of his maiden century as St Johns Tecoma set South Belgrave a total of 280 for victory. In the final game Ferntree Gully Footballers dismissed Olinda for 160 with Peter Dean making 47.

A century to Aaron West helped a FTGDCA invitational XI to 5/170 as they took on the Ringwood Rams in a T20 on Wednesday night; unfortunately a devastating knock by David Johnson for the Rams stole the game away.
