WALTER DOESN’T FALTER
The Basin’s Blake Walter has made a memorable start to the season with a century on 1st XI debut propelling the Bears to an opening victory against Mountain Gate.
Batting first at HV Jones, Blake’s 103 provided the visitors with a perfect platform to build a sizable target for the Gators, eventually amassing 3/275 from their allotted overs, recruits Jake Sherriff (57*) and Scott Vozzo (33) ensured support with the bat. In response, Mitch Goddard (44) and Dewayne Bowden (37) put the Gators in a stable position to build up to a chase, however wickets to Matt Heskes (3/45) helped to scuttle the home team’s plans and secure opening points for The Basin.
Johnson Park returned to Norm Reeves Shield action as they hosted Belgrave. Both Devenish brothers were able to affect the scoring – Steve with 47 and Andrew with 45 respectively. A team effort saw the sharks to 8/191, however the Magpies were able to successfully chase the target to 5/194, thanks to Johnathon Levell with 69, as well as Ibrahim “Adil” Jiva scoring 58.
Knox Gardens played out a tight affair against reigning premiers Knoxfield. Led by Jack Taylor (55), the Knights made 208 in an even team innings. In reply, the Falcons were well placed at 1/106 off 27 overs – Shannon Small the main contributor with 47, however the Knights were able to slow the chase and attain wickets, Zac Wilson the pick of the bowlers with 3/40 in the win.
Upper Ferntree Gully held their nerve against Eildon Park, with a combined effort seeing them to a 12-run win. The Kings, aided by Shane Luck with 45, were able to post 165 on their home turf, with Nathan Caton-Robertson returning to the Panthers as a wicket taker with 3/25. Eildon Park’s chase was yet again assisted by Cody Morris with a 63, however 4 wickets to Rob Birnie put paid to the chase at Kings Park.
In the final match for Round 1 of Norm Reeves Action, Ferntree Gully collected the points against Upwey. Set 190 to win thanks to former Monash Tiger Dave Carman’s 68, the Blues were able to chase down the target 8 wickets down to start the season on the front foot.
In Decoite Shield, Monbulk were successful in their encounter with Lysterfield, as the Hawks, well serviced by skipper Shane Cosstick with 4/17 and 30 runs, passed the target at 4/158.
Rowville produced a quality performance against St Johns Tecoma, with thanks to an all-round effort from Louis Holmes. Holmes took 4 wickets to help restrict the Saints to 8/198, before notching up an unbeaten 46 alongside Luke Guest (73).
South Belgrave scored opening points too against Olinda thanks to a 1-wicket run chase. Tim Scott scored 85 to help Olinda to 180, however South Belgrave chased hard all day, eventually overcoming the target with 4 balls and a wicket to spare.
Lastly, Ferntree Gully Footballers overcame Knoxfield at Carrington Reserve. Set 6/186 for the points on the back of Nick Bogar’s 49, the Knights were restricted to 121, Tim Carrington the pick of the bowlers with 3/25.
