Back to his Best

FTGDCA Round 10

The Basin’s Jake Best has had a quiet year by his standards with only 1 century to his name, although on Saturday he almost doubled his run tally for the year making 154 as the Bears set Monbulk a target of 344. Best shared a 193 run partnership with Scott Vozzo (85) before late wickets fell in pursuit of runs. The Bears finished their 80 overs with 6/343 on the board.  The Hawks have been lacking bowling firepower with no one making inroads on the Basin line-up.  It will be a big chase next week for the Hawks, who will need everything to go their way. The Basin is sitting fifth, waiting for a slipup from one the top four sides.

Upper Ferntree Gully batted first as they hosted Upwey at Kings Park. The Kings made a healthy 239 with Jay Colee (58*) and Todd Burley (46) standing up to the Tigers attack. Cameron Wheeler (4/90) now heads the bowling table with 31 wickets from 10 games, whilst partner in crime Ben Wood (3/43) now has 17 wickets for the season. A win here could see the Kings sneak into second, although a loss may allow The Basin to close the gap.

At Wally Tew Oval Belgrave batted the day out to be 9/222 at stumps against Ferntree Gully. The Magpies master Jonathon Levell made 45 with Jake Balfour 34 and Ben Carnell making 30 . Patrick Mastertoun and Ryan Handley shared figures of 3/51 for the Blues.  With both teams languishing on 12 points for the season there is pride at stake for both clubs.

At home to Eildon Park, Knox Gardens will be disappointed with their score of 161. Loosing 3/21 and 4/8 at either end of their innings certainly stifled their scoring opportunities.  Batting at 6 Joshua Gregory (30) and Matthew Young (49) at 8 made the best of a bad situation, as the Falcons were bowled out in 75 overs. Steven Pimm’s return of 4/18 for the Panthers made sure next week’s chase will be an interesting target if they want a top two spot.

A 44 run partnership between Clint Buckland (54) and Sanitha De Mel (34) was Mountain Gate’s best showing against ladder leader Knoxfield.  The Gators made 203 in 75 overs as Jack Taylor took 4/38 for the Knights.

In DeCoite Shield Harley McDermot took 6/66 as Rowville posted 247 against South Belgrave. Lysterfield made 6/278 against Knoxfield, and Olinda bowled St Johns Tecoma out for 190 and is 0/30 in reply. Footballers will chase Johnson Park’s 237 next week.
