BEARS CANT TAKE A TRICK

Last season’s finalist, The Basin has lost another close tussle this time against the new look Upwey Tecoma outfit to complete round six of the Norm Reeves Shield competition. In a great battle, both sides batted for 80 overs, both scored over 240 runs, but it was the Tigers victorious in the end by just three runs. On day two, the Bears were chasing a target of 243 and were well in the game until opener Chris Wilson was dismissed for 94 with the score on 197. Josh Lee gave good support with 42 but they ran out of time with 3 wickets left in the shed. The innings of Upwey’s Steve Gannell (65) the previous week proved to be the difference in the result. The consistent Ben Wood took 3/39 for the winners.

The ball won over the bat at Knox Gardens where the home side was 47 runs in front of Mt Gate on the first day. The Falcons thought they were in with a hint of maximum points early in the day before things settled down with the Gators 9/148 at stumps. For Knox Gardens, Matt Young claimed 6/36 in the second innings whilst Adam Wild finished with match figures of 9/93.

Monbulk was never in the hunt chasing 381 against ladder leaders Knoxfield and could only muster 167 in reply. Jason Fraser was determined not to surrender his wicket with 68 not out whilst solid performances with the ball came from Trent Evans and Michael Casement, both taking 4/41 ending the game just after the tea break.
In the local derby, Upper Ferntree Gully had a point to prove against neighbours Ferntree Gully winning by 31 runs. Gully’s Josh Henry was dismissed for 73 along-sides Harry Brown and Jayden Bradbury who got starts but it was Upper’s Sean Langenberg who had the last laugh with 3/45 after being promoted from the second X1.

Eildon Park Panthers successfully defended 284 against Belgrave. Johnathan Levell’s 63 was not enough as the Magpies were toppled to the tune of 52 runs. Shane Cosstick’s 4/67 and Steve Pimm 3/39 did the damage with the ball, as Belgrave has lost a little momentum. Cody Morris is heading for 400 runs before Christmas and when he’s on fire the Panthers are hard to stop.
