DUNLOP PUT SKIDS ON MAGPIES

By Steve Brown

Upper Gully turned the tables on their recent batting failure when they encountered little resistance in pursuit of 244 set by the Belgrave Magpies to complete round five of the Norm Reeves Shield. Having dropped the last game to Knox Gardens, the Kings rebounded on the back of Peter Dunlop’s brilliant captains knock of 132 not out, winning the match in fine style by eight wickets against a good attack. Talented Daniel Beyer, returning to cricket this season from injury, lent support with 43 whilst veteran Jay Colee (35*) was at the crease with Dunlop when the game was secured.

Upwey Tecoma tasted defeat for the first time this season when their 272 was not enough to match the reigning premiers Knoxfield. Tom Boxell showed his class with a majestic 85 to steer his side home with four wickets to spare. Regional U/21 representative keeper/batsman Ben Gerloff chipped in with 51 whilst Adith Sundaresh made another solid 43 and is in terrific form.

Knox Gardens made it two wins in a row as they downed Monbulk at home by four wickets.   Chasing 262 for victory, the Falcons were once again lead by Jarrod Butcher with 76 and a half century to young gun Niraj DeSilva. Monbulk are performing well with the bat, however their bowlers are bleeding runs, but a win is not too far away.

Eildon Park’s dual Feaver Medallist Shane Cosstick’s unbeaten 73 was enough to inflict another defeat on last season’s finalist The Basin who were defending 158. Monto Perera has the Panthers in good form whilst the Bears have won only one match this season and need their bats firing next match.

Ferntree Gully opened their account with an 82 run win over Mt Gate.  Gully all rounder Bryce Galvin hits a long ball, and his 78 combined with 50 from Jake Evans denied Mt Gate of an upset.

In Decoite Shield Olinda recorded their first win of the season downing Rowville by 25 runs with opening bowler Mitchell Harris the star with 5/38 for the Bloods. Footballers held off a gallant Knoxfield by 25 runs with former Sri Lankan international Tharanga Lakshita taking five wickets.   South Belgrave’s Daniel Cormack’s  79 was not enough overtake Lysterfield who won by 56 runs, and Johnson Park held off St Johns Tecoma to win by three wickets.
