FOOTBALLERS DRAW ON STAR POWER FOR CUP WEEKEND T20
By Richard Millott
Ferntree Gully Footballers have announced a marquee signing ahead of their Round 4 T20 clash with Lysterfield with the signing of David Hussey.
The former Australian allrounder will make a guest appearance for the Griffins at Pickett Reserve on November 4, adding to a 16-year career at a domestic level, including a 5-year stint in the national squad.
A dignified and long-fabled first-class career has seen “Huss” score 14,280 runs at an average of 52.50, including 45 centuries and 65 half-centuries, as well as a unique feat in 2007/8 in scoring over 1000 Sheffield Shield runs in a season, which made his presence known to earn a subsequent debut for Australia at the MCG against India in 2008.
From thereon, the talented right-hander hasn’t looked back and has featured in no less than 69 One Day Internationals (1796 runs at an average of 32.65) and 39 International T20s (756 runs at an average of 22.90).
Hussey is a T20 specialist across the cricketing globe, with 267 T20 matches to his name scoring just over 6000 runs at an average of 30.03. Hussey’s value in the shorter form is of high demand, playing as part of IPL teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings, and most recently for the Melbourne Stars of which he announced his retirement at the conclusion of last season.
Ferntree Gully Footballers President Nicholas Bogar announced Hussey’s guest stint at the club as a fantastic coup for the club and the local community.
“We are very lucky to get this opportunity. Its not everyday guys playing local cricket get the chance to play with someone of David Hussey's caliber”, said Bogar. "Huss has been on board from the moment we approached him with the idea and has been fantastic in assisting us make this day a reality."
Hussey’s involvement on the day forms a prelude performance to the club’s Sportsman’s Night, with more information to be announced including the identities of 3 more guest speakers of which Bogar said will complete a memorable day and function for the club.
"Combining the double header T20 with our Sportsman's night really gave us the opportunity to make something special happen and make the most out of this fixture. It would be fantastic to see a huge crowd at Pickett Reserve to watch not only Hussey, but witness what should be a great game of cricket against Lysterfield."
