Ferntree Gully & District Cricket Association was yet again well represented amongst South East Country in Season 2016/17, with a trio from Norm Reeves Shield being named in the Region 8 Team of the Year.
Formally announced at the FTGDCA Annual General Meeting on July 5th by Regional Selector Steve Brown, Cameron Wheeler, Cody Morris and Clint Buckland made the cut in the representative team selected from the best of the FTGDCA, Yarra Valley CA, Mornington Peninsula CA and West Gippsland CA.
Upwey’s Cameron Wheeler swept all before him in 2016/17, with 42 scalps to his name at an average of 11.48. Included amongst the runaway Feaver Medallist’s collection, included 4 x 5-wicket innings performances, producing best figures of 8/49 against Eildon Park in Round 11. Proving his talents are plentiful and expanding, Wheeler also amassed 162 runs at an average of 13.50 in a season in which he threatened with both blade and ball.
In life, three things are assured: Death. Taxes. And Cody Morris scoring runs for Eildon Park. Finishing the season as the highest run scorer in Norm Reeves Shield with 563 runs at an average of 62.56, Morris proved yet again a key contributor to the Panthers’ claim in 2016/17 with centuries against Ferntree Gully (124*), Belgrave (100) and Knox Gardens (101*) respectively. A statistically impressive season has become the normal for Morris, having now scored over 500 runs in the last 4 consecutive Home & Away seasons at Eildon Parade at an average of 51.17.
Finally, a breakout season at HV Jones Reserve from Mountain Gate’s Clint Buckland has seen the keeper/batsman named in the squad. A maiden century against The Basin was one of many highlights for Buckland in a season where he notched up 492 runs to his tally at an average of 44.73. The Gator keeper stamped his mark on the competition with his glovework also, featuring in no less than 21 dismissals across the season from behind the stumps.
